The award is named in honor of Agatha Christie, prolific author of "cozy" mysteries, which are typically set in the English countryside.

Book Sense Book of the Year http://www.booksense.com/bspicks/index.jsp The Book Sense Book of the Year Award, formerly known as the "ABBY," represents commitment on the part of ABA members to "handselling" titles that they find particularly worthwhile and enjoyable. There are separate categories for adult and children's titles.

Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards http://www.hbook.com/bghb.shtml The Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards have been awarded annually in the fall since 1967 by The Boston Globe and The Horn Book Magazine. There are currently three categories in which the awards are issued. The categories are Outstanding Fiction or Poetry, Outstanding Nonfiction, and Outstanding Illustration.
Caldecott Medal http://www.ala.org/alsc/caldecott.html The award is named in honor of Randolph J. Caldecott, the 19th century English illustrator. Officially, it is awarded to the "artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the United States during the preceding year."
Children's Books of Distinction Awards http://www.riverbankreview.com/bod01awards.html The Children's Books of Distinction Awards are presented by the nation's only consumer magazine devoted to news and reviews of children's literature. The judges look for books exceptional in the quality of both text and illustration. They also look for books that are compelling to both children and adults; have lasting value; and special appeal to parents and teachers.
Coretta Scott King Award http://www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=Winners The awards were established to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and honor Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination in continuing the work for peace and brotherhood. The late Glyndon Flynt Greer, a school librarian in Englweood, N.J., who envisioned an award that would recognize the talents of black authors and encourage them to continue writing books for children and young adults, founded the awards.

IACP Crystal Whisk Award http://www.iacp.com/awards/iacpAwards/cookBookCurrent.html#finalists Previously known as the Julia Child Cookbook Award, the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) Crystal Whisk Award recognizes quality and creativity in cookbook writing and publishing. The highest score is named as Cookbook of the Year.
James Beard KitchenAid Book Awards http://www.jamesbeard.org/awards/index.php The James Beard Foundation Book Awards were established in 1966 as the R.T. French Tastemaker Awards. Winners are announced each May for original, English-language books on culinary topics published the previous year.
Mildred L. National Book Critics Circle Award http://www.bookcritics.org/index.html Founded in 1974, the National Book Critics Circle consists of nearly 700 active book reviewers interested in communicating with one another about common concerns. The centerpiece of NBCC activities is the annual award for the best book in five categories: fiction, general nonfiction, biography/autobiography, poetry, and criticism.
Newbery Medal http://www.ala.org/alsc/newbery.html The Newbery is awarded to the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. Fredric G. Melcher proposed the award to the Children's Section of the American Library Association in June, 1921. It is named for the Eighteenth-Century English bookseller John Newbery.
PEN/Faulkner http://www.betweenthecovers.com/aw-ab/pen-f.htm The PEN/Faulkner Award is bestowed each May in Washington DC. Each year, over two hundred books are read and judged by a panel of three American novelists. This prize is a revival of an award originated by William Faulkner, who financed it with his Nobel Prize money.

In 2000, the Parents Choice' Awards were expanded to a biannual process.
Pulitzer Prize http://www.pulitzer.org/cyear/2003w.html The Pulitzer Prizes are annual awards for achievements in American creativity in a wide array of fields. The prizes have been awarded by Columbia University since 1917, on the recommendation of a Pulitzer Prize Board. Fourteen prizes are given in journalism. Prizes in letters are for fiction, history, poetry, biography or autobiography, and general nonfiction.

Sibert Informational Book Award was established by The Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. The award honors excellence in informational publishing for children. The award is named for Robert F. Sibert.
